5 Benefits of Sit Ups

sit ups

Sit-ups are a traditional abdominal exercise where you lie on your back and lift your torso. During a sit up, your core-stabilising abdominal muscles are strengthened and toned using your body weight. These muscles assist to strengthen your lower back and gluteal muscles, which helps you maintain good posture.

BENEFITS
  • Core Strength
One of the most compelling reasons to do sit ups is to improve core strength. When performed correctly and used appropriately in a training program, strengthening your core by performing sit ups and other core exercises can help to reduce back discomfort and injuries.
  • Muscle mass increase
Sit ups improve the strength of the muscles in the abdomen and the hip. The performance of the sit-ups can be a good measure of muscle atrophy (wasting of muscle tissue). According to a 2016 study, older women who could do sit ups were less likely to suffer sarcopenia, which is the natural loss of muscle that occurs as people age.
  • Athletic accomplishments
Athletes with strong core muscles have more muscular strength and endurance, so having a strong core will allow you to move more like an athlete. A strong core allows you to maintain good posture, stability, and form when participating in any sport or physical activity.
  • Improved stability and balance
As you move through your day and normal exercises routine, a strong core assists to maintain your body balanced and steady. Your core muscles work to  align and make small adjustments to your pelvis, lower back, and hips, which when are all important for good balance. You are less likely to fall and injure yourself if you have good balance.
  • Improved muscular endurance
Sit-ups train your abdominal muscles to engage for extended periods of time, contract against resistance, and lift weight. It is primarily an exercise for muscular endurance. Research has proven that reduced core endurance is a predictor for future risk of low back trouble, and that muscular endurance is of greater importance than strength.
